2024 James E. Fetterolf Distinguished Service Award

Arbor Financial Credit Union held its 89th annual meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. During the Meeting, the Board of Directors presented the 2024 James E. Fetterolf Distinguished Service Award. This special award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the credit union philosophy of "People Helping People." We are so pleased to announce that Karen Demars, our esteemed Director of Credit & Loan Servicing, is this year’s award recipient! Throughout her 35 years of service, Karen has exemplified what it means to put people first, to listen, to empathize, and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our members.

Karen's journey with Arbor Financial began on December 12, 1988, when our credit union, then known as School Employees Credit Union, had only three locations: our main office in Kalamazoo as well as newly opened offices on Gull Road and in Plainwell. Since then, Karen has played an instrumental role in shaping Arbor's growth and success, witnessing our expansion with membership and offices now totaling 12 across southwest Michigan.

From Karen’s earliest days as a Loan Officer to her current leadership role, she has consistently demonstrated genuine care for our members and dedication to their financial well-being.

Hailing from Whitehall, Michigan, Karen brought her passion for service to Kalamazoo, where she earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Western Michigan University. Her commitment to our members goes beyond the transactional aspect of banking; it is rooted in genuine care and empathy. Karen's ability to connect with members, listen to their stories, and offer support embodies the essence of "People Helping People," the guiding principle of our credit union philosophy.

Outside of work, Karen finds joy in spending time with her husband, Alan, family, and friends at their vacation home on Lake Cadillac. Her love for travel, literature, and nature reflects her zest for life.

Karen Demars is a shining example of dedication and excellence. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for her 35 years of exemplary service and Congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.
